چکیده

We examine the formation of giant elliptical galaxies using their globular cluster (GC) systems as probes of their evolutionary history. The bimodal distributions of GC metallicities in such galaxies are often cited as evidence for the formation of giant elliptical galaxies through mergers involving gas-rich spirals, with the metal-rich GCs forming during the merger process. We explore an alternative possibility: that these metal-rich clusters represent the galaxy's intrinsic GC population and that the metal-poor component of the observed GC metallicity distribution arises from the capture of GCs from other galaxies, either through mergers or through tidal stripping. Formation Scenarios for Globular Clusters and Their Host Galaxies

This review focuses on how galaxies and their globular cluster systems form. I first discuss the now fairly convincing evidence that some globular clusters form in galaxy starbursts/mergers. One way these observations are valuable is they place important constraints on the physics of the formation of globular clusters. Moreover, it is natural to associate the typically metal-rich clusters formi...

On The Formation of Giant Elliptical Galaxies and Globular Clusters

I review the current status of understanding when, how long, and how giant elliptical galaxies formed, focusing on the globular clusters. Several observational evidences show that massive elliptical galaxies formed at z > 2 (> 10 Gyr ago). Giant elliptical galaxies show mostly a bimodal color distribution of globular clusters, indicating a factor of ≈ 20 metallicity difference between the two p...

Wide-Field Imaging from Space of Early-Type Galaxies and Their Globular Clusters

Wide-field imaging from space will reveal a wealth of information about the globular cluster systems of any galaxies in the local universe that are observed by such a mission. Individual globular clusters around galaxies in the local universe have compact sizes that are ideal for the excellent spatial resolution afforded by spacebased imaging, while systems of these globular clusters have large...

A new look at globular cluster colors in NGC 3311 and the case for exclusively metal – rich globular cluster systems

A new look at globular cluster colors in NGC 3311 and the case for exclusively metal–rich globular cluster systems ABSTRACT NGC 3311, the central cD galaxy in the Hydra cluster, was previously thought to host the most metal–rich globular cluster system known. Ground–based Washington photometry had indicated the almost complete absence of the population of globu-lar clusters near [Fe/H] ∼ −1 dex...

Globular Cluster Systems and Their Host Galaxies: Comparison of Spatial Distributions and Colors

We present a study of the spatial and color distributions of four early-type galaxies and their globular cluster (GC) systems observed as part of our ongoing wide-field imaging survey. We use BVR KPNO 4 m+MOSAIC imaging data to characterize the galaxies’ GC populations, perform surface photometry of the galaxies, and compare the projected two-dimensional shape of the host galaxy light to that o...
